How to Stop Worrying and Enjoy Your Life

"Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?" - Matthew 6:27 NLT

Will worrying about an exam that you just wrote change the outcome? Will worrying about money that you just lost bring it back? Will worrying about a mistake that you made yesterday change what happened? Will worrying about what people think about you change how they think about you? The answer to all of these is NO, yet we tend to unconsciously spend our precious time worrying about such things. Worrying is essentially meditating on the wrong things. Instead of worrying about something that you can’t change, why not focus on something that you can change. Here are 3 tips based on scripture that you can apply to stop worrying and really start enjoying life:

1. Submit your worries to God

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Phil 4:6-7

If worrying won’t change anything, why worry? Instead of worrying about your current circumstances, take them to God in prayers. The above scripture is very straightforward. It’s a scripture that I swear by and I’ve applied it on several occasions that I’ve been worried. Are you anxious about an upcoming interview? Pray about it. Are you anxious about your partner leaving you? Pray about it. The best part is verse 7. It works like magic. Once you truly submit your worries to God, you’ll feel at peace in a way that’s not understandable. People won’t understand how you feel at peace when you just lost your job. You should try it.

2. You’re just a Visitor on Earth

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. – Matt 6:19-20

As Christians, our time here on earth is negligible compared to eternity. We’re just visitors in this world; ambassadors of Christ. Being conscious of this will enable you not to focus so much on earthly pleasures. Money is one of the major sources of worry in this world. If you’re on earth temporally, then why do you keep chasing money? Why worry about things that won’t matter when you’re gone? Make no mistake, I’m not saying that money isn’t useful. Money is a tool to be used and not something to have. Money should be a means to an end and not an end in and of itself. Learn more about how to be truly wealthy.

3. Focus on Serving God and your Purpose

As seen in the above point, a very common mistake that people make is considering money as an end. Focusing on money instead of what money can enable you to do. You should enjoy money and possessions, but don’t let them take the first place in your life. Your focus should be on serving God and fulfilling your purpose on earth. By focusing on serving God, you will be able to go through the vicissitudes of everyday life. You won’t worry about details that don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. You can’t serve both God and money.

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” – Matt 6:24
